Position Description: Research Technician Intern

Term: Summer 2026 – 2027 (10 Weeks / 400 Hours)

Reports To: Chief Scientific Officer

Location: Onsite at Lanaco, 2 Sultan Street, Ellerslie, Auckland

Lanaco develops and manufactures unique, high-performing, biomaterial-based multifunctional filter media using natural wool as the key ingredient for a wide range of air filtration applications. Our versatile technology platform allows our air filter media and filtration products to be tailored to customer needs, enabling cleaner, healthier air across global markets.

 

Role Overview

The Research Technician is a core member of the Science and Technical Team. This 10-week internship focuses on evaluating EcoStatic® filter media performance across various physical configurations, aerosol types, and environmental conditions. The role combines hands-on laboratory testing, precise sample preparation, data processing, and technical reporting to generate actionable research insights for our filtration platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Experimental Testing: Execute structured laboratory experiments on EcoStatic filter media to evaluate filtration efficiency, pressure drop, and physical stability under varied flow and aerosol conditions.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Record test parameters accurately, perform comparative calculations, and interpret quantitative results to establish performance relationships across media structures.
  • Technical Documentation: Summarise experimental procedures, data sets, and insights through organised spreadsheets and written technical reports.
  • Laboratory Operations & Safety: Prepare test samples, operate specialized aerosol testing equipment, and strictly follow all Health, Safety, and Environmental protocols.

 

  • Team Collaboration: Share progress during technical meetings, collaborate with R&D staff, and contribute practical suggestions to refine media performance.

 

Person Specification

Academic Background

  • Enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification (NZQA level 6 to 10) at a New Zealand tertiary education institute.
  • Specialisation in Chemical and Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related physical science discipline.

 

Knowledge & Practical Skills

  • Practical laboratory experience, including accurate sample handling, measurement, and basic test rig operation.
  • Solid analytical skills with proficiency in spreadsheet calculations and data presentation.
  • Practical troubleshooting ability and a systematic approach to experimental execution.
  • Clear written and oral communication skills for technical reporting.
  • Understanding of workplace safety standards and the importance of intellectual property protection.

  • High attention to detail and commitment to rigorous record-keeping.
  • Inquisitive, proactive, and self-motivated work ethic.

MBIE Grant Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the MBIE R&D Experience Grant eligibility rules:

 

  • Currently studying, or completed within the last 12 months (final semester end date), an NZQA level 6 to 10 degree in science, technology, engineering, design, or business at an NZ tertiary institute.
  • Legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
  • Have completed no more than one prior R&D Experience Grant internship with Lanaco (maximum of two grant internships total per student).
  • Have not previously worked for Lanaco in a permanent full-time capacity (temporary or part-time prior work is permitted).

 

Employment Terms

  • Hours: 40 hours per week for 10 weeks (400 total hours; minimum requirement of 30 hours per week).
  • Remuneration: $29.90 per hour (gross) minimum, employed as a PAYE employee on the Lanaco payroll.
  • Workplace: 100% onsite at Lanaco facilities in Ellerslie, Auckland (remote or university-based work is not permitted under grant regulations).
  • Schedule: Internship must begin prior to 1 December 2026 and conclude before 31 March 2027.
