Lanaco filter technology selected for NASA Orion Programme

Lanaco’s wool-based filtration technology was selected through NASA’s Orion development programme for an attachment designed to extend the operating life of Orion’s contingency breathing apparatus in November to December 2022.

The Artemis programme is a human spaceflight initiative led by NASA to explore the Moon. As part of safety and emergency readiness, life-support systems require high-performance filtration under extreme conditions.

Lanaco worked alongside NASA contractors, including Jacobs Engineering and Amentum, starting in 2018 to adapt its Helix filter technology. Lanaco engineered a custom filtration attachment built to meet strict NASA specifications for emergency crew breathing protection.

The filter media demonstrated unique performance during testing, maintaining air passage while filtering out large and microscopic hot toxic particles in humid environments over sustained periods. Where standard synthetic media can glaze over and become unusable in under 10 minutes during thermal stress, Lanaco’s filter technology demonstrated the ability to extend system operating life significantly.
